15,000 youth and policy makers from across Africa expected to participate in the 5th YouLead Summit 2021

The East African Community (EAC) in collaboration with the MS Training Centre for Development Cooperation are organising the 5th East African Youth Leadership Summit (YouLead Africa Summit) from November 8-12, 2021.

Since 2017, the EAC together with MSTCDC and other partners through their youth engagement initiatives – the EAC Youth Ambassadors Platform and YouLead Africa – Africa Youth Leadership Program respectively have jointly convened the annual YouLead Summit.

The climax event is now East Africa’s largest and most diverse forum of young leaders, mentors, government policy makers, development partners, private sector, academia, media and civil society coming together to craft responses to Africa’s rapidly growing youth population, their challenges and opportunities, and in 2021 it will expand to cover an Africa-wide audience, hence the name – YouLead Africa Summit.

YouLead Africa Summit 2021 will be hosted under the theme “The Future of Africa: Creating Jobs, Feeding, and Housing the World’s Youngest Continent” as a hybrid event with several speakers and a limited audience at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania in compliance with COVID-19 guidelines, and beamed virtually to an Africa-wide audience, with thousands participating through virtual platforms and live telecast.

The summit is convening for the 5th edition and will highlight the importance of collaborative efforts to boost investment and trade for Africa’s burgeoning youth population.

It is co-convened by Jakaya Kikwete, former President of the United Republic of Tanzania who is also YouLead’s Patron, and Dr. Peter Mathuki, the EAC Secretary-General as co-convener, and the East African Business Council, the region’s apex private-sector apex organisation. It will also feature other Heads of State, eminent leaders, government representatives and private sector representatives from across the region.

The last edition that was held from November 23-27, 2020 of the summit was broadcast live from Arusha, Bujumbura, Juba, Kigali and Nairobi with more than 6,500 participants from 20 countries and 40 speakers interacting in what was one of Africa’s first hybrid format summits.

“I invite all East Africans and friends of East Africa to the YouLead Summit 2021. This year’s theme resonates well with the six leading UN Sustainable Development Goals,”Mathuki said in a video message.

“I therefore invite all stakeholders to support this youth initiative that seeks to reinforce youth participation in regional integration, policy development and implementation,”said Mathuki.
