Construction of Border Market Begins-Ministry of Works.

Hon. Katumba Wamala commands an Excavator-Ministry of Works

On the 11th march 2021, the Minsiter of Works and Transport, Honorable Katumba Wamala officially launched the construction of the Border Market and one Stop Border post in Mpondwe in what has been deemed a step forward towards open trade amongst the Great lakes regions.

In a missive an online missive, the Minister announced the launch of the construction of the new market that would not only boost trade but also include: a Day Care Centre, Health facility, Security Outpost and ‘very good’ washrooms for the vendors.

This new development follows the recent ban on Maize imports by the Kenyan government that citied high levels of mycotoxins found in Ugandan maize as grounds for the ban, only to shortly lift it four days later. This is but a small fraction of some of the challenges that still lie ahead in the journey to a fully integrated East African Community.

Nonetheless, the construction of markets across the nation, namely: Tororo, Busia, Mororto and Soroti among others are geared to promote trade and the income of millions of Ugandans. After he commissioned the Tororo Modern Market in November, 2020, the president urged Ugandans to not work for only their stomachs but to empower themselves financially.
