Kadaga, Oulanyah face off in speakership race as Museveni looks on at Kololo

The election of the speaker of parliament is under way at Kololo independence grounds. The first session of parliament is being chaired by the Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo.

Article 82(5) empowers the Chief Justice to preside at an election of a Speaker and the Speaker shall preside at an election of the Deputy Speaker.

Currently, the battle has been drawn between two Central executive Committee (CEC) Members the top organ of the ruling party, the National Résistance Movement (NRM) and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate ate vying for the position of the speaker of parliament.

The Candidates include Jacob Oulanyah (NRM), Rebecca Kadaga (Independent) and FDC’s Ssemujju Nganda. The elections are under way.

President Yoweri Museveni is in attendance and is scheduled to witness the swearing in ceremony of the new speaker and deputy speaker of parliament.

The election exercise kicked off earlier in the morning. Yesterday, the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the ruling Party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) endorsed Omoro County MP Jacob Oulanyah as its candidate in the speakership race.
