Makerere University 71st Graduation Ceremony kicks off

The Makerere University 71st Graduation Ceremony has kicked off. The five days graduation ceremony kicked off today Monday 17th to Friday 21st, will see over 12000 graduating in various fields of study.

The Chancellor, Prof. Ezra Suruma will confer degrees and award diplomas to 12,550 graduands; 6,433 (51%) female and 6,117 (49%) male.

Of these, 108 will be conferred upon PhDs; 38 (35.2%) female and 70 (64.8%) male, while 1,160 will be conferred upon Masters Degrees; 434 (37.4%) female and 726 (62.6%) male.

Only 115 (33 – 28.7% female and 82 – 71.3% male), 11,151 (5,919 – 53% female and 5,232 – 47% male) and 16 (9 – 56% female and 44% male) candidates will graduate with Postgraduate Diplomas, Undergraduate Degrees and Undergraduate Diplomas respectively.

Only PhD graduands, Masters’ Degree graduands and first Class Honours Degree Graduands are authorized to go to Makerere University to be physically present in the Freedom Square.

All other Graduands (not in the specified categories) will graduate virtually. The Graduands should remain at home and follow the Graduation on NTV, UBC Radio and live streaming on Makerere University social media pages.

“As you struggle to get jobs and make a life, you might stumble and fall. Don’t stay down, get yourself up and keep going”- Vice Chancellor of Makerere University Prof Barnabas Nawangwe said.

He said the College of Natural Sciences has done a great role in the country’s fight against COVID-19 and it continues to take part in world research to among other things find a drug for malaria, a world killer.

Speaking at the freedom square, the State Minister for Higher Education John Chrysostom Muyingo urged graduates to be humble.

 “Don’t boast but instead, choose with patience and hard work to trust in God’s timing. If there is anything that COVID-19 has taught us is the fact we greatly need to invest in technology because if it wasn’t for technology, we wouldn’t be here celebrating” he said
