Oulanyah expresses interest to challenge Kadaga in speakership race

Omoro County MP and former deputy speaker Jacob Oulanyah has expressed interest in standing for the office of the speaker of the 11th house.

Accompanied by his supporters and relatives, the lawyer was received by Tanga Odoi, the chairman of the Electoral Commission of the ruling party, National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Speaking at NRM offices Oulanya said; “I started this journey in 2016 and I intend to finish the race. The next five years of Parliament should not be the same as before, we must change the way things are done at Parliament but above all work to restore public confidence in the institution we send out representatives in,”

“We want to build trust with the public that when you go to your constituency, people will stand and say a Member of Parliament has come.” he said

He will be competing against Kamuli woman MP Rebeca Kadaga who is seeking her term as the speaker of parliament. The two have been at loggerheads after Oulanyah expressed interest in the office of the speaker.

It is now rested to the Central Executive Committee (CEC) which will tomorrow deliberate on who to represent the party in the speakership race. The speaker and deputy speaker of parliament are scheduled to be elected on Monday 24th May 2021.

It is averred that in 2016, CEC the top organ of the ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) asked Oulanyah to step down for Kadaga noting it is her last term. He has barely chaired 120 sessions since he was elected deputy speaker of parliament.

NRM MPs are submitting expressions of interest for the positions of Speaker & Deputy Speaker of Parliament. The exercise that started on Wednesday 19th ended today, Friday 21st May 2021 at NRM offices in Kampala.
